I bet what happened is the email didn't get sent when the shit hit the fan so the forum considered you notified and wouldn't send another for subsequent topic replies.
As for spam, it's just the unfortunate reality that sites like yahoo and google find a domain suspicious until it gets to know them and their emails and a site this small will never send enough emails to gain a sufficient level of trust. My own emails go to spam so I had to whitelist the domain.
