actually i think it is non-ethenol, but 4 years? it's questionable. maybe ill take some out, give it a sniff test and then try it in the lawn mower
bad decisions make good memories.

Haha, that was my test exactly!

Be careful with that sniff test!
ok, engine is back on stand, my half of the workbench is organized. ill find the battery charger tomorrow and maybe, if you're lucky, ill post a pic or two (but really don't hold your breath, it wont be spectacular if i do)

That is one spectacular and utterly fantastic schwimoticon!! :D
in the name of unmotivated progress.
the new engine stand adapters

and the engine back on the stand and 95% ready to install at this point

and in other news i found my other set of J tubes. so yeah, going to throw the empi junk on there. still have a bent bugpack header i might throw on as well. really don't want to waste my good parts on this peace of $#!+
well, i just did some work around the back end of the car. yeap, that's right. i "repaired" the rubber impact strip and finally re-installed it on the bumper. got one less part in the garage and one more part on the car.
hey it's progress
i also washed it, and holy hell has the paint gone to SHIT! damn clear coat is coming off in several places and damn is the color starting to fade. kinda pissed about that. i figure that paint has got to be almost 15 years old. and it was a daily driver. so i guess maybe i shouldn't complain to badly

Bit by bit, little by little... Rome wasn't built in a day.

That's a bummer!
But hey... Isn't there this contemporary craze for what some folks call "patina"? :D
for the most part im not a fan of patina. rust just bugs the hell out of me
sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.... the battery apparently still hold's a charge.
and i upgraded the rear speakers. got some decent 6x9's in nice boxes. also got a box for my 10" sub (still need to get an amp though) so things are moving in a direction. not sure which direction that is yet, but's A direction!
Awesome to hear it man. What are your plans for the sub? Under the 6x9s?
idk, hoping it all fits behind the backseat. going to be tight, sub box is bigger than i remember. i measured about 10 years ago so yeah... i should probably look into that. might have to kick it old school and put the sub in the backseat
Ah, some good news! What about some pics? I'm nosy... ;)
FWIW - brainstorming may be...
Here are the dimensions of a speaker cabinet that should (tight) fit a '71 Bug's luggage area behind the rear seat.
Measures are in centimeters. Material is 15 millimeter thick plywood.

Side view:

My plan was to integrate enclosures for the mid range speakers too.
The result would be two about 35 liter cabinets for the EMPHASER EF10N-G5 woofers.
Finally I discarded the project...
IMHO that fat sound system would add too much weight to the rear axle.
Instead I'll try and find a way to somehow hide this "tiny" AXTON AXB20A system under the rear seat on the drivers side.
Looks huge in that pic but it's a 20 centimeter active woofer with a passive membrane on the backside in a 10 liter enclosure.

Anyway - a complete different enclosure design needs to be developed to make this thing fit...
it all fit. i had to turn the 6x9 boxes sideways, no big deal, still sounds good. sense i still need an amp (which im now thinking im going to have to mount in the trunk unfortunately (unless i find a small one that fits under the backseat).
my picture taking camera battery is crap, maybe you'll get lucky and my video camera will work...
i was feeling ambitious :o
video camera does pictures to, forgot about that.

the quick video

Thanks for taking and posting the pics and vid! 8-)
Do you plan to turn the the 6x9's in a way that the speakers face upwards?
May be flush mount with the top side of the sub?

I had an Emphaser EA 475 amp mounted in the trunk for many years. I'll post a few pics int the "APIT" thread soon.
Aren't these modern Class D amps much smaller? May be one will fit under the rear seat.
no plans on turning the 6x9's. don't need to. as they are it fills the car with sound.
idk about amps anymore. i haven't payed attention to car audio sense shortly after high school. idk what's out there anymore. and iv forgotten more that most people will ever know
i might as well casually mention this. i bought some POR15 and a new Hot VW's car cover (really nice cover btw. and came with free stickers!)
so the plan is, weather pending, start with the drivers side rear window, pull it out, POR15 under the rubber and reinstall the window with the new cal look rubber iv had in the garage for about 2 years now  then do the windshield (both those windows seem to be rust free that's why im starting with them) then move to the back window and rear passenger side cause it's got some nasty going under the bottom edge. not sure i have enough POR15 but we'll see.
side bets on how long it actually takes me to start on, and complete this job?
oh, and i got bored the other day after pulled the old car cover off and laid the 6x9's down so they face upwards now. #makingmoves
I'd make snarky comments about your projected start and completion time but I can't reach you with this stone from my glass house.

i have an excuse this weekend. rain and thunder storms are expected Saturday morning and some rain Sunday
dug through the garage, found the new window rubber! planning on pulling a window tomorrow and ill take it from there...
Dawn dish soap!
used that to install the current windows. idk what's up but it left a shiny film that wont come off. then it dried and got flaky but still won't come off. and in some places got like a crystalized honey looking stuff on it that's a real bitch to get off. idk what the hell... will no doubt end up using it again though
well i popped out the driver side quarter window. oh man... not happy with what i found and im now dreading the passenger side window cause it's the bad one.
anyway, i didn't bother to take pic's of every step. but i used the cleaner/degreaser on it. then the rust converter stuff. and now the first coat of POR15 paint is flashing. it says to use at least 2 coats. im going to shoot for at least 3.
also got the new Cal-Look window rubber on the window. that West Coast Metric rubber fits awesome. i held it up against the car and it's going to be a much cleaner look, im going to dig it.
anyway i did snap a pic of the fist coat drying. ill update this post later with pic's. final paint, and with the window held in place (planning on reinstalling the window tomorrow afternoon)
edit #1:
taking longer to flash than i thought so here's coat #1 (the tape is where the old window rubber went to. im really hoping the new rubber lines up. i know on the passenger side it wont cause the rust is bubbling up past the rubber)

edit#2
coat #2. don't think it needs a third coat. it's fully covered and should be good to go.

paints still wet so i can't show the window in the car, but here it is on the workbench
